Netflix is diving headfirst into the live sports scene, ready to make a big splash.
Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul: A Clash of Titans
Mike Tyson, the controversial former heavyweight champion, is set to return to the ring in a highly anticipated match against Jake Paul. This “boxing mega event” will be streamed live exclusively on Netflix on July 20, as announced by the entertainment company.
This event signifies a major initiative in Netflix’s programming and live entertainment strategy. It aims to strengthen its position as a primary destination for viewers in the United States, challenging traditional broadcasters and cable networks.
The showdown between Tyson and Paul is scheduled to take place at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. This venue, home to the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, can accommodate up to 80,000 spectators.
Netflix’s Partnership with World Wrestling Entertainment
Netflix has also recently secured a 10-year deal to stream the weekly flagship show “Raw” of World Wrestling Entertainment starting in January 2025.
“I’m thrilled to step into the ring with Jake Paul at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas,” Tyson said in a statement with Netflix.
Tyson further added, “Paul has emerged as a significant figure in the boxing scene over recent years. It will be fascinating to see what a young contender can achieve against a seasoned professional like myself.”
Tyson, who will be 58 when the Netflix fight streams, is renowned as one of the most formidable boxers and a fiery personality in modern professional sports. He became the youngest heavyweight champion in history at just 20 years old, boasting an impressive 37 victories – 33 by knockout.
Despite his tumultuous personal life and legal issues, including a rape conviction in 1992, Tyson’s prowess in the ring remains undisputed. His infamous 1997 bout with Evander Holyfield, where he bit off Holyfield’s right ear, is a testament to his unpredictable nature.
On the other hand, Paul, 27, initially gained popularity as an internet influencer, creating viral content on platforms like Vine and YouTube. He transitioned to boxing in 2018 and turned pro in 2020, currently holding a record of 9-1 with six knockouts.
“It’s surreal to think that I went viral for knocking out Nate Robinson on Mike Tyson’s undercard in my second pro fight,” Paul said. “Now, I’m stepping up to face Tyson himself to see if I can take on one of boxing’s most notorious fighters and biggest icons.”
The live stream fight is a collaboration between Netflix and Most Valuable Promotions, a company co-founded by Paul and Nakisa Bidarian in 2021. Their mission is to give fighters more creative control.
